Preserving vision and independence

Since 1999, Retina Northwest PC has been providing cutting-edge and compassionate care to patients with conditions of the retina and vitreous.

These conditions include aging macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment. Most often, our patients come to us via a referral from a general ophthalmologist or other physician.

At our six clinic locations in the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area, the physicians and staff at Retina Northwest utilize the latest medical diagnostic, and surgical treatments to provide the best possible outcome and future for our patients. We exist to help you and are honored to have the opportunity to care for you.

History

Retina Northwest PC was formed in 1999 by the merger of two already well-established retina practices, Handelman & Peters, and Devers Eye Associates. The four founding physicians were the principal retina specialists at Devers Eye Institute, Good Samaritan Hospital, and at St Vincent’s Hospital.

As an independent practice we strive to provide the best and most advanced care for patients with vitreo-retinal diseases in an accessible way. We have always had at least four locations in the Portland metropolitan area, and for many years we saw patients at more distant locations.

With growth, we added doctors, always recruiting from a variety of the top training institutions in the country. We value a diversity of opinion and expertise, and a strongly collaborative environment.

Retina Northwest PC actively participated in the pivotal clinical trials which established the basis of current treatment of retinal diseases. These included AREDS, Eylea, and Lucentis trials and we continue this tradition today with an active research department.

Good Days Chronic Disease Fund: Lack of Funding for 2025

In the past, patients with Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans were eligible to enroll in the Good Days program, a national non-profit charitable organization, that assisted with offsetting the cost of the patient responsibility coinsurance for injections based on financial need.

Unfortunately, at this time, Good Days has not received adequate funding in order to continue to provide assistance for all eligible patients.

As a result, unless there is additional funding received, moving forward, patients will be responsible for their coinsurance amount at the time of their visit. As participating providers in the Medicare program, Retina Northwest is required by federal law to collect unmet deductible, and coinsurance amounts for Medicare and Medicare Advantage plan beneficiaries.

Retina Northwest recognizes the importance of continued treatment for our patients – if you are unable to afford your coinsurance, please do not skip your scheduled appointment – there may be other treatment options available.
